Why Illinois needs We Could Be right now
What I like about being the Director of Education is the ability to listen, learn and adjust. I’ve been doing that since joining the About Face staff and it’s good to see the manifestation of that process come to fruition with We Could Be, a participatory educational experience with lessons on sexuality, wellness, and gender identity.
We Could Be is designed to act as the classy, cool auntie, who lets young people know what parents or teachers might have tiptoed around. For older viewers, the show models how to be that trusting adult in the lives of youth – something we could all use a brush up on.
Did you know that 63% of Illinois schools don’t touch on subjects like sexual health, sexuality, and gender identity? We have got to get this show on the road! That is where you come in. We already have shows scheduled in Chicago and we’re in exciting discussions to head outside of the city to southern Illinois. However, we still have room for your group or your idea for booking this show in 2025.
If you know or are an educator or business owner who sees the value of this show, please reach out to me (dionne@aboutfacetheatre.com). I’m also happy to give you more details about what the show entails and answer any questions about the booking process.
About Face got its start with a show in schools and other community spaces. Because of the ripple effects of the pandemic, it’s been five years since we hit the road with a touring show (2019 doesn’t seem that long ago, yet here we are!) A lot has changed in the world since then, so we’re adjusting and adapting to get the tour off to a great start. We Could Be is one of our main programs this year, so it’s all hands on deck in the office to get this show staffed and booked. I’m so so grateful that I’m not doing this alone.
I look forward to shaping the future of education with you!
