About The Show

What happens when 2 Black lesbians and a sitar meet at The Den?

Zahra and Shanta set out on an adventure to find stories of Black lesbians in the public archive. Though at first they are met with silence and gaps, they come to discover unexpected and remarkable unsung histories of some loud and out Blues women of the 1920’s and 30’s. Gathering inspiration from the past, these visionary performers build a vibrant and joyful tribute that shines a light on Black lesbians today. Along your journey with them, you’ll get to add your voice to the growing chorus of people building a future that is safe and inclusive for all.

OM Mission was originally commissioned and produced as part of About Face Theatre’s KICKBACK festival in partnership with the Stony Island Arts Bank. The show has since been featured as part of Chicago Live! Festival on Navy Pier and other venues.

The show runs 90 minutes without intermission.

headshot: Kezia WatersKezia Waters (Director, he/they) is an anti-discipline artist whose work is deeply rooted in storytelling. Their practice leans heavily into sonic performance, guided by the principles of deep listening, where body and emotional intelligence hold central importance. Through their process, they engage with the immediacy of the moment, manipulating elements by repeating, elongating, reducing, and expanding them in ways that reflect intuitive response and Jazz sensibilities. Kezia’s upbringing under a Black Liberation Theology informs their artistic exploration, even as queerness reframes and reimagines those traditions. They received their MFA in Acting from Ohio University and an MFA in Studio Art from School of The Art Institute of Chicago. They have also served as an Adjunct Professor for Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. They have performed in the Biennale d’art Performative de Rouyn-Noranda of Canada, Dazibao Gallery in Montreal and Recto- Verso in Quebec City and numerous galleries around Chicago. Kezia was a 2023 In-Session Fellow at ThreeWalls, studying the Performance and Folklore of Zora Neale Hurston.
