Welcome from About Face Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director

Headshot: Megan Carney

“The problem with a category is that you reduce something as celestial as a human being into a word. Words only approximate truth, and art is where we go when we actually want truth.” – Alok Vaid-Menon

We are so grateful you have chosen to find truth here, with us, at Modern Gentleman.

This is a big moment. In About Face Theatre’s 31-year history, this is our first time producing on the Schwartz Stage at Raven Theatre. Between this remarkable world premiere and our partnership with Raven, something historic is unfolding right here on North Clark Street.

Modern Gentleman is a story about love, yes, and about dating while queer and trans. It’s about Adam who is surrounded by people who love him and want to see him thriving. It’s even about how we have to love ourselves most of all, the lesson we get to learn again and again throughout our lives. Adam is not a symbol or a cautionary tale, he’s our brave guide on a vulnerable journey. His path is loaded with messy complications, painful truths, and fun discoveries. It’s such an honor to witness these big hearted characters and grow along with them.

Enriching and expanding the rom-com genre, this exuberant play by Preston Max Allen insightfully directed by Landree Fleming reflects the fullness of a joyful and searching life. Overall 45 powerful artists and theatre makers have collaborated to bring this production to life, crafting the world with specificity and trust. So when the lights come up, we hope you’ll linger. Talk to us, explore our upcoming programs, and consider becoming a donor who helps build the future we all deserve. This work is only possible because of people like you.

Thank you for supporting our mission to advance LGBTQ+ equity through community building, education, and performance. In 31 years, we have told so many stories — and this one feels like exactly the right story for right now.

We’re so glad you’re here,

Megan Carney
About Face Theatre Artistic Director

A Message from our Director

Change happens whether we want it to or not. We get one go round (maybe, but that’s another story, isn’t it? Or is it?) And how do we learn ourselves along the way? How do we learn the immense gift that is learning others while they’re on their own journey, contracting and expanding alongside us? We’re a delicate and somehow thankfully hearty ecosystem that evolves and invites us to watch ourselves do so. Modern Gentleman, this delightful and deep queer dramedy, is a gift given by this brilliantly talented playwright and team. I invite you to sit with us, change alongside us, change US while you do so (thank you), and be seen.

They recieved their MFA in Acting from Ohio University and an MFA in Studio Art from School of The Art Institute of Chicago.
