AFT holds workshop for new Leather Daddies: The Musical
Join About Face Theatre for a workshop performance of the new in-development musical Leather Daddies.
About Face Theatre has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Arts Midwest to produce and host a workshop and performance reading of the new show Leather Daddies: The Musical. Created by AFT Artistic Associate Scott Bradley and recording artist Mercy Bell, this new rock n’ roll musical experience is based on the Chuck Renslow biography Leatherman by Tracy Baim and Owen Keehnen. Jonny Stax and About Face Theatre lead the commissioning team behind the effort to bring these trailblazers to life in an immersive transmedia experience honoring the power of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Leather Daddies recounts the adventures of artist-entrepreneur-outlaws Domingo Orejudos and Chuck Renslow as they lead a pack of leather-clad rebels, pushing the boundaries of art, activism, and sexual exploration at a time of crushing conformity and persecution. They dreamt of a world where interracial same-sex love could be expressed without shame or hiding. That world didn’t exist, so they turned their dream into an underground empire that would grow into a global community.
The Leather Daddies team first held a development workshop at About Face in February of 2022, followed by a public performance of some of the material in March 2022 at the Leather Archives & Museum. The creators will hold another development workshop at About Face Theatre June 12-18 culminating in a public performance of in-process material on June 18th at The Den Theatre.
About Face is thrilled to be part of the development of this new work and we look forward to seeing where the show goes from here! Learn more about Leather Daddies: The Musical…
