Warhol Superstar: Nico

Nico-&-Andy

1960’s pop culture femme fatale, Nico, was introduced to Andy Warhol by Bob Dylan and soon became part of his clique of “Superstars,” working with him on experimental films like Chelsea Girls, The Closet and Sunset. It was in 1967 when Warhol managed the The Velvet Underground that Nico was to join the band as their “chanteuse” at Andy’s request. Nico’s unique Teutonic voice was used as the lead vocal on “Femme Fatale“, “All Tomorrow’s Parties“, “I’ll Be Your Mirror” and backing vocal on “Sunday Morning“, on their debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico.   The album would go on to become one of the most influential rock albums of our time even though it was it was overlooked when it was first released.

Before moving to New York to pursue singing and acting Nico was a high fashion model in Europe, gracing the covers of Elle, Esquire and Vogue.  Her signature long heavy fringe, bleach blond hair and long lashes became the “Modern” look of New York and Europe. On the back cover of the first Velvet’s LP, Nico wears a white trouser suit typical of her calm, cool and chic style.

1. Bleach Blond Wig

The hair inspiration for Heidi Klum and so many other celebrities, it’s the go-to hair style for a vogue look. Don’t have long blond hair, this wig will do the trick.

2. Trouser Suit

Her many masculine-fit suits are a lesson in keeping it simple and chic. Get a jacket and trousers and bring the 60’s back.

3. Blouse

Floral blouses have recently made a comeback!  Find your own at any local vintage clothing store like Underground Vintage in Wicker Park or buy it from H&M.
