TRANS SCRIPTS, PART I: THE WOMEN
Seven remarkable transgender lives, intertwined in one beautiful tapestry.

This show is a rare thing for Chicago audiences: trans women’s tales told entirely in their own words – brought to life exclusively by transgender actors.

Funny, articulate, and gripping, Trans Scripts shares stories from our gender diverse community seldom witnessed in any theatre. Human. Essential. Spanning a wide spectrum of generations, nationalities, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

More than ever, transgender women may be the most misunderstood cohort in America. Burdened by decades of lurid, exploitative Hollywood stereotypes and press coverage that has cast them as either sub-human freaks or extraordinary super-heroes.

Trans Scripts demonstrates eloquently that trans struggles are indeed everyone’s. To be seen. To be loved. To make a living and find a place among our fellow humans, forging lives that are true and meaningful.

This staged reading follows the play’s acclaimed productions at Boston’s renowned American Repertory Theater and The Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The event marks AFT’s commemoration of Transgender Awareness Week, celebrating our community and contextualizing the November 20th Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), honoring those who perished in violence over the year.

“The script’s details are richer than fiction.”
— The Guardian

“Thrilling and glamorous… What’s striking is how, as the women emerge and speak with ever more eloquence, this narrative of courage, transformation and new life comes to seem not only like a vital story in itself, but also one with huge resonances for the whole idea of human freedom…”
— The Scotsman

“Lucas and co aren’t presenting a polemic, but a set of deep-rooted stories full of warmth and vulnerability that speaks to anyone en route to discovering their own identity. It’s also whip-smart funny.”
— The Herald

“These stories matter, and when told with such clarity and heart, you can’t fail to be moved. A truly unmissable piece of theatre…”
— Edinburgh Festivals Magazine
