AFYT World Premiere 2017

BRAVE LIKE THEM

A world premiere by the About Face Youth Theatre Ensemble
Co-directed by Ali Hoefnagel and Kieran Kredell.

July 26st – August 6th
The Buena at The Pride Arts Center

AdHocHome_vertical_webAbout Face Theatre is pleased to present the world premiere of BRAVE LIKE THEM, a devised play exploring the underground “riot grrrl” movement of the 1990s written by and featuring members of the About Face Youth Theatre Ensemble and directed by AFT Education and Outreach Director Ali Hoefnagel.  All performances take place in The Buena located at Pride Arts Center in Buena Park.

This year our AFYT ensemble of youth, ages 13-23, has chosen to
investigate how systems of oppression function within our own queer
subcultures. Specifically, the group has spent the year researching the underground “riot grrrl” movement of the 1990s that gave rise to bands such as Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, and Sleater-Kinney. While the music and literature of this movement sought to forge a space for all girls –
typically characterized by an unapologetic expression of female power and an aggressive dismantling of the patriarchy – the voices at its
forefront were almost exclusively white and middle-class. AFYT’s
young ensemble aims to celebrate the riot grrrl movement for all the good that came out of it but also dissect its inherent racial and class
discrepancies.
